Customer is Key To More Rubberized Asphalt Pavement

Rubberized Asphalt Pavement

Over the past decade, researchers in the U.S. have tried to develop an approach that will allow the introduction of rubberized asphalt pavement in a way that is both cost-effective and free of the engineering challenges that have limited the use of crumb rubber modifiers (CRM) in the past.

CRM has proven to last longer than regular asphalt, provide a quieter pavement, better traction, lower maintenance and a great return on investment, Red Clark, president of Asphalt Plus LLC told attendees at the Clemson University Global Tire Conference in April.

“Today, the customer is the key to getting recycled rubber into asphalt” Clark said. The rubber recycling industry needs to listen to the customers.

Dry Process Project

“Chemically engineered crumb rubber introduced like an aggregate into asphalt plants during mix production through a dry process meets those customer needs.”

The crumb rubber is blown into the plant just like any other aggregate, no additional equipment or handling is needed, Clark said. In addition, the dry process mix is more workable at low temperatures than other technologies.

Rubberized Asphalt Highway Trial Project

A recent paving project in Wisconsin successfully laid a rubberized asphalt surface using the dry

process application method during night paving with an outside temperature of 41 degrees. “We can extend the paving sea.son and give customers flexibility in scheduling projects,” he said.

Dry process CRM has been in the field 15 years and with almost 4 million tons of mix in successful use on 1,000 lane miles of interstate highway plus thousands of miles of state and county roads in a wide range of environments and mix designs, there is increasing acceptance for the material by both regulatory agencies and paving contractors.
