Project Overview

In October 2021, the City of Kansas City, Missouri and KCMO Public Works completed a low-traffic demonstration project using Elastiko® Engineered Crumb Rubber (ECR) in a Superpave 12.5 mm asphalt mix.

Project Location

E. 12th Street, Kansas City, MO, between Charlotte and Campbell.

Rubberized Asphalt Case Study: Kansas City, MO

  • This demonstration project was designed to evaluate the performance of dry process rubber-modified asphalt using Elastiko® ECR.

  • The project evaluated dry process rubber-modified asphalt in real-world Kansas City conditions.

  • The objective was to improve the pavement’s resistance to rutting and cracking while maintaining excellent ride quality.

  • The project became the first full-scale use of Elastiko® ECR in Kansas City and was incorporated into the City’s standard specifications.

Mix Design & Materials Used in Kansas City

The Kansas City demonstration project used Elastiko® Engineered Crumb Rubber in a Superpave 12.5 mm dense-graded asphalt mix.

Binder and Rubber Content

The mix used a PG 64-22 binder with 15% ECR by weight of virgin binder.

Dry Process ECR Technology

Elastiko® Engineered Crumb Rubber was added at the asphalt plant during mixing using the dry process method.

Mix Type and Design Method

The mix type was Superpave 12.5 mm dense graded, designed using the Superpave gyratory design method.

Performance Results

The Kansas City demonstration project showed excellent early and long-term field performance with Elastiko® ECR.

Rutting Performance

Excellent rutting resistance was maintained through years of service. Hamburg Wheel Tracking testing showed a 1.94 mm ECR mix rut depth after 20,000 passes compared to a 3.32 mm control mix rut depth.

Cracking and Pavement Condition

The pavement showed outstanding resistance to both longitudinal and transverse cracking, with smooth ride quality and minimal distress observed after more than three years of service.

Key Project Highlights

First full-scale use of Elastiko® ECR in Kansas City.

Incorporated into the City’s standard specifications after successful construction with standard paving operations.

Low-traffic environment provided an ideal setting for long-term pavement performance evaluation.

Elastiko® ECR delivered improved rutting resistance, enhanced crack resistance, increased flexibility, longer pavement life, and sustainability through recycled tire rubber.

Project Summary

This Kansas City, MO rubberized asphalt demonstration project used Elastiko® Engineered Crumb Rubber in a Superpave 12.5 mm dense-graded asphalt mix on E. 12th Street between Charlotte and Campbell. Constructed on October 25–26, 2021, the 1,275-foot low-volume local street project evaluated dry process rubber-modified asphalt in real-world Kansas City conditions. The mix used PG 64-22 binder with 15% ECR by weight of virgin binder. After more than three years of service, the pavement showed excellent rutting resistance, outstanding resistance to longitudinal and transverse cracking, smooth ride quality, and minimal observed distress. Hamburg Wheel Tracking results showed a 1.94 mm ECR mix rut depth after 20,000 passes compared to 3.32 mm for the control mix, demonstrating 41% better rutting resistance with Elastiko® ECR.
